What Is An Instant Pot

An Instant Pot is an electric pressure cooker. It is a multi-use appliance that can cook foods quickly at high pressure. Steam pressure builds up inside the pot, which creates a higher temperature environment that cooks foods faster. Unlike old fashioned pressure cookers, the Instant Pot has many safety features that make it safe and easy to use.

An Instant Pot is a pressure cooker, sauté pot, slow cooker, steamer, rice cooker, yogurt maker and warmer all in one. Ive been amazed at the versatility of my Instant Pot and the flavor and texture of the foods that I am able to cook in it. The high pressure inside the Instant Pot can tenderize even tough cuts of meat. It creates rich, complex flavors seriously, Ive never had better chili than Instant Pot chili!

    Instant Pot Shredded Chicken

I love using shredded chicken for recipes like Cheesy Chicken and Rice and Homemade Chicken Pot Pie, and it couldn’t be easier to make tender shredded chicken than by using the Instant Pot.

    • Cook the chicken as the recipe directs.
    • Once cooking time has elapsed and pressure has been released, remove the chicken breast from the instant pot and place it into a large mixing bowl along with ½ cup of the cooking liquid.
    • Shred the chicken, using two forks, a handheld mixer at medium speed, or a stand mixer at low speed. Alternatively, you can shred the chicken right in the inner pot of your instant pot using 2 forks or a handheld mixer.

What Size Instant Pot Can I Use

Thats the great thing, you can use any size. This will work for 3 quart, 5 quart, 6 quart or 8 quart. I have an 6 quart Instant Pot. With the smaller Instant Pots you may need to cook less chicken breasts at a time because you want to make sure they are in a single layer. Dont pile up the breasts, this could result in undercooked chicken.

It Matters How They Are Frozen

Are your chicken breasts frozen individually like this or in one large clump? Depending on how they are frozen, it will make a difference in the cooking time.

    • If you have individually frozen chicken breasts, the cooking time will be the same no matter if you stack 2 or 6 breasts in the Instant Pot. The time you program the Instant Pot will be based on the size and weight of the INDIVIDUAL chicken breasts and not the total weight of all the breasts.
    • If the chicken breasts have been frozen in one solid block, the cooking time will depend on the weight of the frozen block of chicken.

For instance, lets say you have 4 chicken breasts that weigh 10 ounces each. If they were frozen in a solid block then you will need to cook them based on the total weight of 40 ounces or 2-1/2 pounds.

Chicken breasts that are frozen in a solid clump like this need to cook on high pressure for 12 minutes per pound. So in this scenario, the chicken will need to cook for 30 minutes on high pressure.

If instead, those same 4 chicken breasts were individually frozen, you can cook all four of them based on the individual weight of 10 ounces. In this scenario, the chicken breasts only need to cook for 10 minutes.

If that sounds curious to you it is because air can circulate around the individually frozen chicken breasts and cook all of them evenly. But a solid block of chicken is much denser and needs more time for the center to cook completely.

How To Shred Chicken With A Mixer

Want to do a little less manual labor? You can also make shredded chicken with a mixer!

Both a hand mixer or a stand mixer works, whichever you have handy. Just be aware that you might send little pieces of chicken flying around the kitchen.

That is why I prefer the fork method. It may take a little bit more time and the chicken shreds are less fine but I wont find any chicken bits stuck to the window. On most days, at least.

To make it easier on your mixed, cut up the chicken breast into smaller pieces. If possible, cover the bowl you are shredding the chicken.

PS: the least messy version of preparing shredded chicken is to put frozen chicken in pressure cooker and let it sit for a few hours. But you will need a pretty rich broth and some vegetables to fill it up. Otherwise, the chicken might disappear completely.

Tips For Making Instant Pot Shredded Chicken Breasts

Instant Pot Chicken Breast (Frozen or Fresh)
    • Boneless skinless chicken breasts are easily accessible and used in many recipes, but chicken thighs are great as well. I actually prefer thigh meat because it can be more tender and flavorful. It’s also cheaper. Feel free to use frozen chicken thighs instead. You will probably want to take the time down a minute or two as thighs are smaller in size and will cook faster.
    • I have tested this recipe in both the standard 6-quart Instant Pot and the Ninja Foodi Deluxe . It works great in both! Just know exact cook times and time to come up to pressure may vary between brands and sizes of machine.
    • I purposefully kept this recipe without seasoning so that it could be made without thought and used in a variety of recipes and different cuisines. If you are feeling spicy, try adding any type of spices that you would like, from greek to italian seasoning, taco seasoning, even marinades and barbecue sauces can go right in the pot! I made sheet pan nachos using Instant Pot shredded chicken that taco seasoning was added to!
    • If you have fresh chicken, that works just as well! Cooking frozen chicken takes a little longer, but otherwise the rest of the recipe is the same! For medium sized chicken breasts set to 7 minutes of cook time and for large chicken breasts set to 9 minutes of cook time.

    Instant Pot Water Test

Before you use your Instant Pot for the first time, you should perform a water test. The Instant Pot water test is like an initial test run for your Instant Pot.

The water test will both ensure that your Instant Pot is working properly and will familiarize you with using your Instant Pot.

One of the Instant Pots that I purchased was defective. A water test helped me to determine that the Instant Pot wasnt working properly. I was able to contact Instant Pot support and get a replacement.

Note: If you have the Instant Pot Ultra, you will use the dial to select cooking programs and change the cook time and then press start. Instead of a steam release valve that you turn, the Instant Pot Ultra has a steam release button that you will press if you want to manually release the pressure. The steam release valve will seal automatically on the Ultra, whereas on other models you turn the valve between a venting and a sealing position.

Can You Over Pressure Cook Meat

Yes, pressure cook frozen chicken in a pressure cooker as long as it is cooked according to the instructions. Additionally, make sure that the chicken is well-done before release from the pressure cooker.

If cooking frozen chicken at home, be careful not to overcook it as this may lead to it becoming tough and rubbery. Pressure cooking from frozen also poses no problem as long as the chickens are properly cooked through. However, most people find that these dishes can become overcooked if not carefully monitored.
