Guss Fried Chicken A Must Put In Face Experience
Looking for the best fried chicken in Austin? Try Guss Fried Chicken.
Some businesses that grow beyond their original location do so because of a deliberate business plan and an astute management team. Others expand because the food is just that good that it would be a crime not to share the love beyond the original spot. Guss is one such place.
Originating a nondescript shack just a couple miles outside of Memphis, Guss is one of those feel good stories where down home cooking, Southern hospitality and a helluva secret recipe resulted in a beloved and legendary restaurant. The most recent Guss franchise opened in doors in Austin and its a welcome addition indeed.
Austin has not shortage of places to sample great fried chicken but if you dont get yourself to Guss soon to sample the wares, then you, sir, hate flavor.
Theres nothing fancy here. No interpretative appetizers, no metal silverware, no chef interpretations of traditional Southern food. Just fried chicken, sides and pie. I mean, you may as well just get it to go everything is gunna be served on foam plates anyway.
Well, its not just chicken, they also have fried green tomatoes. Because what better way to prepare for a fried main, than with a fried appetizer.
Oh look! They come in drinking cups! Kudos to the person at Guss HQ who spotted a cheeky but perfectly functional way to keep inventory down.
Pro tip: stick with the pecan theres a reason its the most ordered flavor.

Franchisee tells What Now Austin that they are currently in the process of getting their permits from the City of San Marcos.
The city has been very responsive and we are just waiting for the permits to be finalized.
When will the store be opening?
Supply chain issues have delayed our ability to get the materials that we need, but Im hoping well be open by Summer 2023, Hickerson says.
And why was San Marcos the chosen location for the upcoming franchise?
I like the areaits a small but growing, vibrant area, and the surroundings are growing. Itll be a good market for us.
Finally, when asked why she became involved with the brand to begin with, Hickerson strikes a warm note.
Everyone loves fried chicken. It goes beyond demographics. Its really nice to see all types of folks together, eating and enjoying.

Success Did Not Happen Overnight

Over 60 years ago in the small community of Mason, Tennessee, Napoleon âNaâ Vanderbilt created something amazing â fried chicken that could unite a community. In an era of divisive racial attitudes the residents of Mason found that they could all â black and white â agree on how much they loved Naâs fried chicken.Such an amazing feat did not occur overnight. After experimenting for several years in a local tavern, Na and his wife, Ms. Maggie, began selling their chicken, sandwiched between two slices of white bread, out of the back door of the tavern. As demand grew, Na and Maggie were encouraged by local residents to build a freestanding restaurant. Unfortunately, the Vanderbiltâs were of modest means and could not afford such an expansion however, generous, chicken loving locals offered to supply them with the materials necessary to build their own restaurant. Na, a skilled carpenter, built the restaurant on a piece of land he and Ms. Maggie owned on Highway 70 in Mason. Maggieâs Short Orders opened its doors in 1973. The building still stands today and still serves Na and Maggieâs amazing fried chicken.

Famous The World Over
Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken is a full service restaurant serving made to order, hand-battered fried chicken. Not to be confused with Nashville hot chicken we serve southern spicy fried chicken. We make all our southern sides in-house daily from shredding fresh cabbage for our coleslaw to cutting potatoes for our potato salad. Most of our sides tend to be on the sweeter side to pair perfectly with our chicken. Enjoy a sweet tea, a really big beer, or a bottle of DOM with your meal. Finish up with one of our simple southern pecan, chess, sweet potato, or chocolate chess pies baked daily. Gus’s is the current reigning champion of the National Fried Chicken Festival, Travel Channel ranked Gus’s as the 12th Tastiest Restaurant in America to Chow Down, and GQ Magazine believes Gus’s is one of the top 10 restaurants in the world worth flying to for a meal.
A Bonner Family Recipe
Maggie and Na continued to serve their community until their deaths, in 1982 and 1983 respectively. The restaurant, however, remained a family affair. Naâs only son, Vernon âGusâ Bonner, inherited Maggie and Naâs priceless recipe and the restaurant they worked so hard to build, literally from the ground up. In 1984, Gus and his wife, Gertrude, reopened under the now well-known name, âGusâs World Famous Hot and Spicy Fried Chicken.â Though the name may have changed, the Bonner family continued to honor Na and Ms. Maggieâs legacy by following and even perfecting their beloved fried chicken. You canât keep good fried chicken a secret, and before long Gusâs World Famous Hot and Spicy Fried Chicken had a following that stretched far beyond the quiet streets of Mason, Tennessee. Regional publications, including the Memphis Commercial Appeal, began featuring the restaurant in the late 1980s, and national publications, such as Saveur and GQ magazine, soon followed. In fact, in January 2001, GQ named Gusâs Fried Chicken one of the top ten meals in the United States worth flying for.
