Nashville Hot Chicken – How to Make Crispy Nashville-Style Fried Chicken

For the Marinade:

  • Chicken Wings: I like to use a combination of wingette and drumette for these chicken wings.
  • Buttermilk: The buttermilk aids in making the chicken tender and full of flavor.
  • Hot Sauce: Use any of your favorite hot sauce to kick up the heat for the marinade.
  • Pickle Brine: Give the wings the right amount of salty goodness with some pickle brine.
  • Seasonings: Cayenne pepper, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper are wonderful together to give that intense flavor we all love.
  • Vegetable Oil: You will need a couple of cups of vegetable oil for frying.

For The Coating:

  • Flour: I use all-purpose flour because it gives the perfect coating.
  • Seasonings: Youll need some more seasonings for the coating.

Nashville Hot Sauce:

  • Butter melted: You can use some melted butter or the leftover oil you used to fry the chicken.
  • Brown sugar: To counteract a little bit of the spice, add in some sugar. Its amazing!
  • Seasonings: Red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, chili powder, salt, and paprika go well together to give you a sensational result.

Storage Of Leftover Fried Chicken

You can store the leftover fried chicken and have it later on. Before storing, let the fried chicken pieces cool down to room temperature, put them in an airtight container, and refrigerate it. You can keep it in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Later on, reheat Nashville hot chicken for a few minutes in an air fryer or at 350 degrees Fahrenheit in the oven. So, in this way you can enjoy the crunchy leftover Nashville hot chicken again effortlessly.

“I have made this several times and it’s always a big hit when hosting,” says alb. “When it’s just for my little family we take the leftovers and make chicken salad for lunch. As other reviewers have mentioned, I learned after my first time, do not make the sauce too early otherwise the spices, butter, and lard will separate instead of staying together.”

“My husband and sons love hot food,” according to Lis. “Me, not as much. I was kind of scared of the amount of cayenne pepper in this recipe but the fats and the brown sugar took the edge off. It was fantastic all of us agreed. It was hot, but not the kind of hot where you are gulping milk in order to stop crying.”

“I lived in Nashville for a few years and learned a trick or two from some friends’ mommas,” says kb4ird. “Folks, this is the real deal. Secondly, I hate frying…pan frying, deep frying, you name it, I hate to do it. More specifically, I hate the clean-up. This is so worth it. It was delectable!”

How Do You Make Nashville Hot Chicken

Traditional hot chicken is made from whole chicken parts, marinated in a buttermilk and hot sauce brine, coated in a flour mixture, deep fried, and then slathered in a spicy red-hot paste. If youre in the market for a new deep fryer, here is a list of the top deep fryers this year.

Ive gone ahead and made my hot chicken sandwich with boneless chicken thighs and chicken breasts. This makes eating it easier as a sandwich, and reduces the cooking time. If youre using chicken breasts, I highly recommend cutting them into three pieces. Cut the chicken crosswise in half, then take the thicker top half of the chicken and cut it lengthwise, splitting the thickest part. This allows the chicken to cook faster and more evenly.

Follow this breading process for extra juicy, crispy hot chicken!

  • Combine buttermilk, hot sauce, eggs, and salt in a large shallow dish.
  • Combine flour, paprika, cayenne, salt, and pepper in another large shallow dish.
  • Dip the chicken in the dry flour mixture to coat all sides.
  • Then dip and flip the chicken in the buttermilk mixture.
  • Dip the chicken back in the dry flour, creating a double coating. This will fry up slightly thicker and stay crisp when you brush the spicy sauce over it.
  • Set aside on a large baking pan while you repeat with the remaining chicken pieces.

Place the chicken on the bottom bun, brush the chicken with the spice paste, and then top with pickles and bun top.

Can I Make Wings For A Crowd

Nashville Un

Yep! Of course, you can make wings for a crowd. I find its best to use a fryer instead of a skillet when I am making a large number of wings. This makes the process go faster.

Store the wings in a crockpot on warm, an electric roasting pan on warm, or in the oven at 250 degrees until you are ready to serve. All of these methods work well for keeping them warm until you are ready to serve them.

  • Put chicken pieces in a bowl, sprinkle 1 tablespoon of kosher salt, and toss it evenly. Cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 1-2 hours or overnight.
  • Prepare the marinade in a bowl. Put pickle brine, buttermilk, egg, hot sauce brine, salt in a bowl and whisk them together. Add chicken pieces in this buttermilk and hot sauce marinade and mix thoroughly to ensure each chicken piece is coated. Cover the bowl and let it rest for 2 to 4 hours. Save the rest of the marinade.
  • Sift flour and cornstarch in a bowl. Add salt, paprika, cayenne pepper, black pepper and mix it evenly.
  • Take two shallow dishes. In one swallow dish put the flour mixture and in another, put the marinade mixture.
  • Now follow this chicken breading process to ensure juicy and crispy fried chicken.
  • Take one piece of marinated chicken, put it into the flour mixture and coat it thoroughly from all sides. Dip that coated chicken piece in the buttermilk mixture fully, remove from marinade and allow the excess marinade to drip back in the bowl itself.
  • Put that chicken piece back in the flour mixture, coating evenly from all sides. Thus, create a double coating, and put it on the baking sheet.
  • Do the same process with the remaining chicken pieces one by one. Let all the chicken pieces rest and dry for a few minutes.
  • The rest time for coating helps the crust to adhere to the chicken pieces. This double coating causes the chicken to fry up slightly thicker and remain crisp when the spicy sauce is brushed over.

    How To Make Nashville

Once the chicken has brined for 1 to 8 hours, set out two shallow dishes. Pour the buttermilk and hot sauce into one shallow dish and mix well. In the second dish, combine the flour, cornstarch, and creole seasoning. Mix well.

Now drain the brine off of the chicken, and set out a metal rack. Working one piece at a time, dunk the chicken in the flour mixture, then in the buttermilk mixture, and then dip back in the flour mixture. This double coating dredge makes the crunchiest and crispiest fried chicken skin.

Place the breaded chicken pieces on the wire rack as you go. Pro Tip: Its good for the chicken breading to rest before frying in a pan, so dont heat the oil until all the chicken has been well coated.

After all the chicken is breaded, set a large saucepot on the stovetop and clip a cooking thermometer to the side of the pot. Pour enough frying oil into the pot to fill it about two-thirds full. Turn the heat on medium to medium-high and bring the oil to frying temperature.

Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 250 degrees F. Set another rack on a baking sheet for the cooked fried chicken. You want to hold the chicken in the oven after frying to keep warm as you work in batches.

Once the oil temperature reaches 350 degrees F, carefully place 3-4 pieces of chicken in the fry oil. Use tongs to move the chicken so it doesnt stick to the bottom of the pot. Fry for 7-8 minutes, until golden brown.

All butter sold in the United States must contain a minimum of 80% milkfat, the white, frothy stuff that comes up when it is heated.

Grades, ranging from the best grade AA to grade B, are based on flavor, body, color and salt and water content. European butter will have more fat content and also more flavor with a darker yellow hue. Cultured butter has active cultures and will give it more of a tang, like buttermilk or yogurt.
