Actually, nothing could be further from the truth with Wendys new sweet-n-spicy chicken biscuit offering. It is all sweet and no spice. We tried it out from a location in the Northeastern US, along with their honey butter biscuits and Seasoned Potatoes .
The hot honey chicken biscuit was a big miss on spiciness and overall taste. It is almost impossible to taste any of the habanero spice. The most dominant flavor is the sweetness of the honey. What is worse is that the fried chicken fillet is dry. And so is the biscuit.
A biscuit this dry is better suited with creamy white sausage gravy. Not on its own in a breakfast sandwich like this one. We were disappointed in this new offering from Wendys. On the other hand, the Seasoned Potatoes were a refreshing twist of pepper and garlic. Too bad there is nothing else from Wendys breakfast menu to pair it with.
Wendys Releases Hot Honey Items
DUBLIN, OHIO Culinary team members at The Wendys Co. Inc. needed a distinct element to set the restaurant chains hot honey chicken biscuit and hot honey chicken sandwich apart from competitors products.
They found it in habanero peppers. Both hot honey items made their debuts on Feb. 2.
We know were not the first ones to come out with a hot honey chicken sandwich, said Eryn Bennett, manager, culinary and product innovation, in a Feb. 2 webinar.
Research and development work lasted for more than a year before the company settled on a formula that included habaneros.
They definitely are on the higher end of the Scoville scale, but they also have a ton of flavor, Bennett said. What I really love about them is theyre fruity, theyre citrusy, and theyre just so nice to work with, and they blend really well with the honey were using.
Wendys wanted to do more than just blasting somebodys palate, said John Li, vice president of culinary innovation.
The reality is, its all about balance, he said. Thats why it took a year and a half to get something like habanero, which brings all of those complex elements that a lot of other peppers actually dont have.
Bennett said the hot honey is added at various parts of the sandwich build and the biscuit build.
The chicken biscuit contains an all-white meat breakfast chicken fillet drizzled with honey sauce and served on a buttermilk biscuit. It sells for $3.19.

Representing the brands first new breakfast item in two years, the Hot Honey Chicken Biscuit features a savory, chicken fillet drizzled with Wendys new hot honey and served on a warm and fluffy buttermilk biscuit. It carries a suggested price of $3.19.
Meanwhile, the new Hot Honey Chicken Sandwich features a spicy chicken breast, melted Pepper Jack cheese, three strips of applewood-smoked bacon, crispy pickle chips, and topped with hot honey on a toasted premium bun. It carries a suggested price of $5.99.
Hot Honey Sauce is infused with habanero peppers and can be enjoyed separately in a dip cup.

From the highly anticipated launch of the Strawberry Frosty to the rollout of French Toast Sticks, Wendy’s has been shaking up its menu offerings this summer. However, with new farewells come some unfortunate goodbyes, and one popular sauce is rumored to be getting the boot.
In a recent Reddit thread, one user shared that their local Wendy’s discontinued the Hot Honey Sauce, expressing disappointment by the elimination of the sweet and spicy condiment.

Two other Reddit users who seem to be Wendy’s employees commented on the thread, revealing that their Wendy’s restaurants will no longer be receiving shipments of the Hot Honey dipping sauce. However, they added that the Hot Honey Chicken Sandwich, which features spicy chicken topped with the chain’s Hot Honey Sauce, is still available.

Although some locations appear to have begun phasing out the sauce, others still have it available, with one Reddit user commenting that they just ordered the sauce to “test” its availability.
Eat This, Not That! reached out to Wendy’s for a comment and has not received confirmation on the discontinuation of the sauce.
What To Serve With Hot Honey Chicken Sandwiches
I like to keep it simple with this hot honey chicken recipe and just serve chips or french fries with it. Another good side dish would be slow cooker mac and cheese. The creaminess would balance well with the spicy notes in the chicken.

Wendy’s claims its new Hot Honey Chicken Sandwich and Hot Honey Breakfast Biscuit have flavors that were forged in the flames of a blacksmith’s workshop to create its mythical flavor. Or so a Wendy’s trainee claims before his trainer snaps him back to reality. A woman has been listening to the trainee’s fable, waiting for him to hand over her food–though she did appreciate the story.

All that stuff I said about the onion rings in the big bacon cheddar burgers? Wendys fixed it in the Hot Honey Chicken Sandwich. This sandwich features a spicy, classic, or grilled chicken filet topped with pepper jack cheese, bacon, a habanero-based hot honey sauce, and what is perhaps Wendys best culinary creation since the spicy nugget crunchy dill pickle chips. These pickle chips deliver all of the crispy crunchy mouthfeel of fried onions, but with a flavor that actually works with and elevates fried chicken.
The pickles also add a lot of depth and complexity to this sandwich, supplying a hint of sour tang that plays well with the citrus-y habanero honey sauce. Im telling you, theyre really good.
The sauce hits you first, its sweet, but unlike all the other fast food hot honey chickens out there, its not sweet to the point of tasting like candy. Instead, that sweetness acts as a pleasant introductory note. It presents itself gently before ratcheting up to simmering heat, which is reigned in between bites by the brine-y/ earthy flavor of the pickles. Its a well-thought-out combination of flavors, and its really one of the best chicken sandwiches Ive had since Popeyes first dropped their iteration.
Wendys really has something here, but they need to figure out how to put it together better so that its good all of the time, not just some of the time.

At this point, its safe to say most brands have a signature chicken sandwich to compete in the intensely competitive category ignited by Chick-fil-A and bolstered by Popeyes.
Those sandwiches have generated sustained success throughout the past couple of years, illustrating a consumer set thats not even close to getting tired of such options. Fortunately for those consumers, the innovation wheel in the quick-service segment never stops and so it only makes sense that were starting to see some chicken sandwich iterations.
Enter Wendys new hot honey chicken sandwich. The sandwich includes an all-white meat chicken breast, melted Pepper Jack cheese, three strips of Applewood smoked bacon and crispy pickle chips. Its topped with hot honey and served on a premium bun.
During a recent trip to Wendys headquarters in Dublin, Ohio, Vice President of Culinary Innovation John Li called the sandwich approachable.
Its got the right balance of heat with sweet without being overpowering. The pickle chips add some textured fun, he said.
Li also said the hot honey platform launch provides good evidence of a food-first approach for the brand.
Hot honey is good on pizza, but its a heckuva lot better on chicken, he said during a media presentation Wednesday.
